Someone Leaving

A woman lived alone in a small apartment. Every morning she found her front door unlocked.

At first she blamed herself. Everyone forgets things. She started checking the lock every night before bed. Once. Twice. Three times.

The door kept being unlocked in the morning.

So one night she made a plan. She locked the door and turned the key twice. Then she dragged a heavy chair across the room and pushed it tight against the door. Nobody could get in without waking her up.

She went to sleep feeling a little safer.

The next morning, the chair stood neatly to the side. The door was unlocked.

Her hands were shaking when she remembered the security camera in her hallway. She had installed it a year ago and forgotten all about it. She opened the app and scrolled through the footage of the night.

She watched the whole night at double speed. The hallway stayed empty. Hour after hour.

The camera never showed anyone entering her apartment.

It only showed someone leaving.
