He Described the Killer Perfectly. That Was the Problem.
His statement sounds airtight. Most people read past the two impossible details.
The parking garage under the shopping center closes at ten.
At half past ten, a security guard made his final round. Level 3 was silent. The lights hummed. One car was still there, parked alone in the corner.
Next to the car lay a man. He had been shot.
His wallet was still in his pocket. His watch was still on his wrist. So this was no robbery. This was something else.
The cameras on level 3 had been broken for weeks. No footage. No witnesses. Nothing to go on.
Except one thing. The parking system had registered a second car that night. It left eleven minutes after closing time.
The police found the driver that same evening. He opened his door in his pajamas and did not seem surprised to see them. He was calm. Very calm.
He did not wait for their questions. He said:
“I know why you are here. I saw the whole thing. But the other man did it. He was bald, about 1.85 metres tall. He wore a cap and a long-sleeved shirt. He also had a tattoo on his arm.”
The officers looked at each other.
Then they arrested him on the spot.
Why?
His description was impossible.
He said the man was bald. But he also said the man wore a cap. If the cap was on, how could he know there was no hair under it?
He said the man had a tattoo on his arm. But he also said the man wore a long-sleeved shirt. If the sleeves were down, how could he see the tattoo?
You cannot see through a cap. You cannot see through a sleeve. He was not describing a man he saw that night. He was describing a man he invented. And he invented one detail too many.
There was no other man.
