One Guess

This story spread across the internet years ago. Some say it happened in a small town. Some say it never happened at all. You can decide for yourself.

A father was home alone one evening. His phone rang. Unknown number.

The voice on the line was calm. Too calm. It said his daughter had been taken. But she was still inside the house. Hidden. The father got exactly one guess to find her.

The father panicked. He thought of the attic. The garage. The closets. The space under the stairs.

Finally he said: “The basement.”

The voice replied: “Correct.”

The father ran down the stairs. In the basement, he found his daughter’s head. Nothing else.

Only then did he understand why the kidnapper had sounded so calm the whole time.

Every room in the house would have been correct.
